Call for community assistance

we_are_spc  is a filker who has attended the last few, OVFFs. They were hoping to attend this year, but they have yet to get their day job -- they are a massage therapist licensed in Ohio -- to pay off well enough to make the trip possible.

I mentioned that there may be enough filkers interested in their professional services to cover the cost of the trip. They estimate this at somewhere around 4 hours at their customary rate of $60/hour. They are willing to work in chunks of 1/4 hour or more, and can accept various forms of online payment.

I know some of my readers are filkers, and some of them will be at OVFF or know someone else who will be. I'd like to see whether the community can pledge enough hours of massage time to make it possible for we_are_spc  to attend.

I was hoping for some action so you could come. I don't want to suggest you should come on spec, but I am ready to follow through if you do, and spouse may also be interested. Here's wishing for something soon.

Sorry. Doing something "on spec" is fronting the cost of what one is doing, speculating (whence "spec") that the money obtained from the venture will exceed the cost of the venture. So, for you, that would entail spending money you don't really have, amounting to three or four hours of massage time you have no commitment for yet, in the hopes of getting at least that much work from the attendees. And although I'd like to think you'd have a chance to win that bet, I would not feel good about suggesting you come and seeing you fall short. While it would be nice to see you again, and good for the community if you were able to come, it would be enough worse for you personally if you weren't going to at least break even that I can't rightly suggest you do it for those reasons.

It does. Oh, also, I almost put this up in the DW filk community, but I wasn't sure how that sort of promotion would've been seen by others.

I thought this had posted, buit apparently not.

I wouldn't want to fall short either (And being in the hole again makes it wors; I'd have to keep the pledges in payPal until I was out again. No biggie really), but I'm just this close to saying "fuck it." I haven't had a concert this year; the only thing I've bought for myself was the iPad...but at the same time, I'd love a yar where we could come on our own steam.

I'm starting to feel like we're takingadvangage of people's kindness (in the wrong ways) and None of us like that.

I did, however, have two clients last year, and I probably would have had more were I licensed back then. ... I also did some work in WA on the downlow...aske callibr8 how lovely that worked for her in both places. :) and we enjoyed it.

I'd suggest you start by looking through other postings and see whether there are other similar posts, and what was said about them. If you can't get any help there, a softer approach might be that you consider making a post in your own blog about your services. You could then post to the filk community mentioning that you hope to get to OVFF this year, mention that you'd be interested in setting up massage appointments to help cover the cost of the trip, and link to your post.

You aren't. One really nice thing about the filk community is its inclusiveness: everyone who wants to be in it is in it. Those of us who direct disposable income in support of the community are doing it for the sake of the community, which will only endure if its members support it. Community members who help make it possible for you to participate in community activities get their win from that alone. Getting a massage thrown in is a bonus.

...I'd actually thought about that. Then making it public. I give you advanced permission to share said post incase you have Ohio friends in my area or near by.

...I'd share it in the FB groups, too, but I'm in there under my legal name, and since I don't have a profile pick on my Fallon V account (Of which I now have up) ... I'm not sure they'd allow me in there yet.

Especially since I have people there that I only *see* there, you, included. I have memories of the last two I was at-my first one in...2017, I think it was, last year's...and I'd rather not have that streak broken.

We will also have a square reader with us, so we can take cards while we're there. If that helps anyone out. Maybe it won't help right up front, but we know a lot of venders who don't, and it frustrates some people.
